O οργανισμός Arcadis παρουσίασε την ετήσια έρευνά του για τη βιωσιμότητα στις πόλεις, καταγράφοντας τις καλύτερες πόλεις του κόσμου. Τα κριτήρια για την επιλογή βασίστηκαν στους τομείς υγείας, της εκπαίδευσης, του εισοδήματος, της εργασίας, της εγκληματικότητας, του πράσινου μέσα στην πόλη και του κόστους διαβίωσης των νοικοκυριών μεταξύ άλλων.


Στη λίστα συμπεριλαμβάνονται κυρίως Ευρωπαϊκές πόλεις αλλά δεν συμπεριλαμβάνεται καμία πόλη της Αμερικής, καθώς αυτές παρουσιάζουν μεγάλους δείκτες εισοδηματικής ανισότητας, εγκληματικότητας, πολλές ώρες εργασίας, έλλειψη οικονομικής δυνατότητας για αγορά ακινήτων και υψηλούς δείκτες παχυσαρκίας.
